BonaVista has a core group of investment professionals that have been with the firm since inception. The majority of key professionals have more than twenty years investment experience, providing discretionary management of Canadian equities, Canadian fixed income and balanced funds as well as an international equity product that is sub-advised by Sprucegrove Investment Management Ltd., and a U.S. equities product sub-advised by Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management Ltd.
Terry Bacinello is the president of BonaVista. Terry graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) in 1976, following up with a post-graduate Master of Arts (Economics) degree from the University of Waterloo in 1978. In 1984, she received her Chartered Financial Analyst designation. In 1987, she joined Confed Investment Counselling (CICL) where she started as a portfolio manager of US equities and in 1988, switched over to the Canadian market. Terry took on an increasingly central role in client relationships and business development. In 1994, Terry was appointed President of CICL and led a management buyout that created BonaVista Asset Management. Since that time, Terry has been at the centre of the development of BonaVista's business strategy and investment performance.
Van-Khanh (Van) Nguyen is a Canadian equity analyst who joined BonaVista in 2009. Van graduated from McGill University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree (1995), followed later by an MBA from the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto (2004). Van is also a CFA Charterholder (2000). Van’s work experience spans 13years, including analyst and portfolio management experience, on the investment management and brokerage sides. Most recently, Van was Associate Portfolio Manager at a large retail investment firm, where she was employed for 5 years. Her previous employers also include two large Canadian brokerage firms.
Janice McLaughlin has extensive experience in the fixed income markets, having worked in a variety of positions of increasing responsibility. She began teaching in 1970 before switching careers and moving to the investment field. Her experience includes trading in bonds and money market securities, and extends to familiarity with various methods of bond portfolio management, including cash flow matched immunization and liability matching. At Metropolitan Life Canada, she advanced to the position of Manager, Public Fixed Income where she was responsible for the trading of publicly-issued bonds and managing the company‘s commercial paper borrowing program. In 1989, Janice joined Confed Investment Counselling, with responsibilities for fixed income trading. Since that time, Janice has gained greater experience in the pension marketplace and implements a portfolio management program initiated and monitored by Terry Bacinello.
Ryan Williams is a Canadian equity analyst who joined BonaVista in 2009. Ryan graduated from the University of Sydney in 2004 with a Master of Commerce (Finance & Economics) and from Wilfrid Laurier in 2002 with a Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance). Ryan also became a CFA Charterholder in 2008. Ryan has worked in the financial services industry for 7 years, in corporate banking, private equity and public market investments. Most recently Ryan was a Senior Equity Analyst at National Bank of Canada in the Alternative Investments division where he helped manage a long/short equity fund.
